Mediterranean Diet

The Mediterranean diet may be defined as a nutritional recommendation inspired by the eating habits of southern Italy, Greece (mainly of Crete), Morocco and Spain.

The main characteristics of the Mediterranean diet is the high consumption of olive oil, fruits and vegetables, cereals in the region, moderate to high consumption of fish, moderate consumption of dairy products, especially cheese and yogurt, low-moderate consumption of red wine, low consumption Red meat and meat products and fresh fruit for dessert. Geography plays an important role in the Mediterranean diet, the climate favors the cultivation of most of the characteristic products of the diet and the proximity of the Mediterranean Sea encourages the consumption of fish instead of red meat. In general, foods that are part of the Mediterranean diet have low in saturated fats and high in monounsaturated fats and fiber. It is believed that one of the main foods that contribute to the health benefits of the Mediterranean diet provides the olive oil is widely used in the daily diet of the region. The red wine moderately consumed by the people of the region is also touted as a beneficial to health because it contains flavonoids and antioxidant properties.


The Mediterranean diet is more associated with a healthy diet and way of life than a Weight Loss Program. Weight loss, if any, would be a natural consequence and not the goal. Recently, in 2010, UNESCO recognized the Mediterranean diet as a Morocco Intangible Cultural Heritage of Italy, Greece, and Spain. For UNESCO, the Mediterranean diet is a body of knowledge, practices and traditions that go beyond food and also involve the relationship of people with their environment, their customs and activities linked to fishing and farming. How to Follow the Mediterranean Diet There are numerous variations of menus that can be considered the Mediterranean diet programs, but the basis of this diet gives more emphasis to the ingredients used in the preparation of meals. The Mediterranean diet pyramid helps to visualize what foods can be consumed or those that should be avoided or used very rarely as sweets and red meat.
